Best Beer I Had Last Week

Michael Donato, September 09, 2014 -

Not every beer we drink is a Heady Topper. In any given week we drink plenty of beer that barely makes an impression, but sometimes it's worth stepping back and taking a look at what we've been putting down our throats.  These are the beers I drank last week.

The clear winner here by the metrics is Goose Island's Halia. It is also my subjective winner, being an excellent example of the Saison style. It was crispy and tasty, with all the right earthy and funky undertones that make it a great drink.

The worst beer of the lot was the Clown Shoes Chocolate Sombrero both in my opinion and by BAR and style+. While it wasn't bad, it just had a little too much going on in terms of chili and cinnamon that didn't add to the stout, particularly a 9ABV one. They're nice flavors, but in this case the beer was better off without them so it loses points. In a tough style, it does even worse than you might expect.

I have no idea why Anchor's Big Leaf Maple is rated so poorly by drinkers, though I have a theory that Amber/Red style is often offputting to some.
