December's Most Popular Beers

Eno Sarris, December 12, 2013 -

Travel day sucks, especially after an exhausting week at baseball's winter meetings. So here's an admittedly easy post, just because it's fun. And at some point, we'll have something like this on the leaderboards.

Here are December's most popular beers, sorted first by check-in counts, limited to the top fifty, and then sorted by average rating. These are the better beers that untappd users are drinking right now:

Num Beer Average Count
1 Heady Topper 4.53 19862
2 Pliny the Elder 4.34 19125
3 Hopslam Ale 4.13 28363
4 Breakfast Stout 4.02 24111
5 Lagunitas Sucks - Brown Shugga' Substitute Ale 3.89 24631
6 Sculpin IPA 3.87 27442
7 Pumking 3.82 18706
8 90 Minute IPA 3.81 19285
9 Two Hearted Ale 3.79 31169
10 Guinness Draught 3.69 53816
11 A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale 3.64 18850
12 Racer 5 IPA 3.59 18102
13 Stone IPA 3.58 25812
14 60 Minute IPA 3.57 24554
15 West Coast IPA 3.52 18370

First: looks like Founders' Breakfast Stout is zooming to the top of the wish list. Second: There are surprisingly few surprises on there. 10 of the 15 best-rated most-popular beers are IPAs, too.

And hello Lagunitas. The Little Sumpin' Sumpin' and Brown Shugga are in heady competition right now. Go get some Lagunitas if you can, it might be an under-rated brewery.

Just because I was curious, your top 15 just by raw count. The popular kids:

Num Beer Score Count
1 Bud Light 2.28 60993
2 Guinness Draught 3.69 53812
3 Miller Lite 2.45 52523
4 Coors Light 2.36 50329
5 Yuengling Traditional Lager 3.18 45905
6 Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) 2.57 43960
7 Samuel Adams Octoberfest 3.36 42697
8 Sierra Nevada Pale Ale 3.36 38401
9 Samuel Adams Boston Lager 3.08 36199
10 Lagunitas IPA 3.06 33278
11 Blue Moon Belgian White 3.06 33278
12 Heineken 2.73 33161
13 Stella Artois 2.91 31307
14 Bell's Two-Hearted Ale 3.79 31171
15 Budweiser 2.34 30597
16 New Belgium Fat Tire 3.24 28992

It's impressive, isn't it, that Lagunitas and Bell's and Sierra Nevada pushed their way onto this list. But why why why Fat Tire.
