Beer Tastes Better On Friday

Michael Donato, September 09, 2015 -

Work weeks are long. 40+ hours in an office with your coworkers and boss is mentally exhausting. You could practically rename ‘happy hour’ something more appropriate like ‘work sucks’. As those final hours tick down on Friday we head out to the bar ready to unwind and relax and start the weekend.

We talk a lot on BeerGraphs about the role context plays in how you rate a beer, so is it any surprise that beer seems to taste better on Fridays and the numbers back it up?

Not only does the beer taste better on Fridays, but we drink more of it. That’s pretty impressive considering most of us spend many of those hours working, compared to Saturday and Sunday. It’s not a super huge difference, but factoring in all the summer barbeques and the weddings and football it’s a little surprising the weekends aren’t running away with these totals that go back exactly a year.

It also doesn’t surprise me that Mondays are the worst. Garfield has been telling us that for decades. Sure we drink more on Monday than the next two days, but it’s more out of stubborn refusal to accept that we have another week to grind through.

It’d be neat to run this against ABV and see if we generally drink harder stuff on the weekends, but I’m not sure what the results would be. There does seem to be a larger subset of BCBS varieties on the Sunday list as compared to Monday, but that’s just spot-checking. Personally I know I like to break out the big boozy bottles when I know I’m going to be home all day on the weekend. Drinking a 750ml bottle of 11% imperial stout can be rough unless you spread it out over 5-6 hours.

I match this table well as I do tend to drink more on Fridays since I’m more likely to have a second in the evening and more likely to stop at a brewery on the way home. What about you? When do you do most of your drinking?
