April's Hottest Brewery

Eno Sarris, May 08, 2014

At some point, we may have splits on the leaderboard so that you can answer a question like this on your own. Who's doing things now? Who's innovating over the last month? Who dominated April?

But for now, we'll have to do the queries and show you the data the best we can. So, the first question: Who's been the most prolific over the last month? The answer:

Brewery Total
Evil Twin Brewing 3
The Matt Brewing Company (Saranac) 3
Omnipollo 3
Cigar City Brewing 2
Dugges Ale- & Porterbryggeri AB 2
Mikkeller 2
All in One Brewing 2
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. 2
Stone Brewing Co. 2
The Bruery 2

63 total new beers since April first, and these are the only breweries with multiple new beers. Evil Twin was selected on 12 of 92 Fantasy Beer League teams, so you guys are in the lead in the 'new beers' category. The Bruery's Rue D'Floyd was more popular than their other version Floyd D'Rue, but the two toegether put them on this list. Mikkeller came out with the modestly liked Spontantripleblueberry, but also the second-worst-rated beer in the sample -- Black Ink & Blood. (At least his Evil Twin came out with Beer Table Table Beer, the -5 Beers Above Replacement beer that was worst in the group.)

Speaking of popularity, here's the sum of the BAR for each brewery that put up a new beer in the last month:

Cigar City has now been on two lists, so it's easily in the lead for April's hottest brewery. Good news after that whole thing that went down. In fantasy terms, it would have been funny to take Saranac as a 'new beers' play, even with the knowledge that it would hurt you Beers Above Replacement category.

We have one more relevant statistic here -- Style+. Style+ measures how good your beer is relative to style, full-stop. Now we can look at the breweries' new beers and their average Style+ numbers:

Brewery Average Style+
Panhead Brewery 117.75
Carton Brewing Company 111.06
Wicked Weed Brewing 110.88
Belching Beaver 109.52
Omnipollo 107.82
Three Floyds Brewing Company 107.29
Lawson's Finest Liquids 106.95
Cigar City Brewing 106.91
Saint Arnold Brewing Company 106.65
Doctor's Orders Brewing 105.95
AleSmith Brewing Company 103.93
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. 103.91
The Bruery 103.60
Alpha State 103.24
Kyodo Shoji Koedo Brewery 102.71
Tröegs Brewing Company 101.99
Lagunitas Brewing Company 101.64
Pipeworks Brewing Company 100.84
Perennial Artisan Ales 100.67
SweetWater Brewing Company 100.18
Stone Brewing Co. 100.08

Nice to see AleSmith, Saint Arnold and Three Floyds made some good new beers in a crowded industry. But you see that Omnipollo's beers were slightly better thought of, if not as popular as Cigar City's? They added a saison they made with Prairie -- Potlatch -- and a double IPA named Nebolution that's doing very well (3.83 average rating, 1.87 BAR). They might be the sleeper of the gang.

Even if Cigar City, with their Humidor Sour (1.99 BAR) and Good Morning Mekong (5.67 BAR), can easily be crowned BeerGraphs' Beer of April.
